They celebrated the saint which the island is dedicated to this evening, and the island where lit with even more lights then usual. I saw boats going back and forth there all day and night, taking people over.

During the Crusades Era and the break-up of the Byzantine Empire (1204 AD), along with the rest of the Peloponnese, the area came under Frankish rule until 1389 AD, when it was then taken over by the Venetians, and in 1540 AD to the Ottomans . Following that and the alliance between the Venetians, the Germans, and the Polish against the Ottoman Empire, the chief of the allied forces, Vice-admiral Francesco Morosini was ordered to capture the capital of the Peloponnese, Nafplio at that time, and the bay of Tolon was chosen as a place suitable as a base of operations for his expedition as it was the safest place in the region, while the shore was used for the army to camp. After the success of his expedition and until 1718 AD, when the area again was occupied by the Turks, Tolon was used as a secondary naval station for the Venetian fleet.
A monument of this time is the small church named Zoodhohos Pigi, built in 1688, and the ruins of the fortress on the island of Daskaleio in the bay of Tolon. Fortifications, ruins of houses and reservoirs can also be found on Romvi island

]]>One of the restaurants we frequented a lot while in Tolo had a baptism celebration this evening. The whole restaurant was packed, and they had these really nice candle decorations on the beach in front of the place. We still managed to get a table there though. :)

It was probably built in the mid-14th century by the first Despot of the Morea, Manuel Kantakouzenos, and named after one of the most celebrated monasteries of Byzantine Constantinople. The frescos in the main church, dating between 1348 and 1380, are a very rare surviving late Byzantine cycle, crucial for the understanding of Byzantine art.

]]>Gloomy morning, gloomy mood. This was one of those days where I felt how the hope of a better financial life was dwindling. One step forward, two steps back, truly. It was one of those days I felt “I can’t take it anymore”. It has been so much the last year. And every day, still, I grieve, I long, I miss my best friend.
I have survived the unfathomable, in several forms, on several occasions. I should be dead by now. Physically, mentally, spiritually people have tried to kill me. Yet, here I am. It will take much to topple me. If I waver, I usually find some sort of balance in the end. And even when I fall, I always get back up. Always.
I have stumbled several times. Earned numerous bruises and scars, physically, mentally, spiritually. My body has been pummeled into a bloody pulp, which still does not come close to the bruising my heart have endured. I have been shredded to pieces by branches I didn’t see or discover before it was too late. But I have gotten back on my feet again. Every time.
My wings have always been strong. They carry me, lift me up, sometimes way too high against the sky so that I lose control, the winds throw me back and forth… it is wonderful for a while but then it becomes scary. I lose control of my emotions, or others take advantage of my compassion and love I am able to share when in this state, and when they leave me, when they tell me and show me that they don’t want me in their life anymore, it takes a long, long time still, where I keep loving without expecting anything in return. But on days like these, where so much else is going “wrong” as well… in the end I just can’t find the strength to keep loving, to keep hoping, and I pummel to the ground so hard.
It can be frightening both falling so far and soaring too high. It never used to scare me, though, because I had someone that knew, that understood, that was of the same breed that would always catch me when and if I fell. The security in knowing someone watches over you, cares for you beyond the realm and scope of what others can even start to fathom… I felt I could take on the all the dark creatures in the world, all the devils in disguise, with no fear. It was… like walking a tightrope fearlessly, knowing that the safety net were just a few meters below me.
For a long time I thought I could do without any kind of safety net. Before I knew what it felt like to have one. I strutted on my line, straight ahead without looking down, without looking back, but began to tremble. I sailed with the wind, and tried to ignore that the wings were getting tired.
But then I fell. I dived head first at full speed towards the ground. And it was dark. So incredibly pitch black dark.
Eventually I came to myself again. I was hurt. Really bad. But I was alive. It was something that kept me up. When the pain became so severe that I would just lie down and close my eyes, there was someone there who pushed me up, embraced me and helped me to stand steady. Stroked my hair and assured me they would not let me disappear. I would still stumble a bit sometimes, but rarely panic. Because I knew I would be caught if I fell. It gave me the opportunity to flap freely. I knew someone was always there, no questions asked, no reserve. No favor to big. As I was for my friend. I saw this person through things no one can even fathom, I was the only one left standing when everyone else abandoned. No matter the consequences it applied upon me. The shock, the unreality of that person disconnecting… it was, it is unimaginable. Never in my wildest dream did I see it coming. We were golden! We had sustained so much, so many attacks on our friendship, but never let it be the end of us. And the hope I always find within, of things changing… it is dwindling. Now, when that web of safety is not existent, it is like I am back to walking the straight line with trembling legs. Especially on days like these. Where everything else also seems like it is crumbling. I have so much love and compassion to offer, and always find hope, but this day… I just couldn’t.
I miss my safety net. Everyone needs their webs.

]]>This fellow greeted me on my way to the work place in Leikanger this morning! This is a breed of horses that derive from the county of Sogn and Fjordane where Leikanger is situated. She was very curious about my camera and me, and also really wanted a treat - she kept nibbling on my hand that I tried to pet her with. Unfortunately I didn't have any treats!

This was the day where I returned to Bergen, and by the time I left the weather had changed drastically, and it was raining and grey and windy.

The Fjord horse or Norwegian Fjord Horse is a relatively small but very strong horse breed from the mountainous regions of Western Norway. It is an agile breed of light draft horse build. All Fjord horses are dun in color, with five variations in shade recognized by their breed registries. One of the world's oldest breeds, it has been used for hundreds of years as a farm horse in Norway, and in modern times is popular for its generally good temperament. It is used both as a harness horse and under saddle.

The Fjord horse is one of the world's oldest and purest breeds. Horse were known to exist in Norway at the end of the last ice age. It is believed that the ancestors of the modern Fjord horse migrated to Norway and were domesticated over 4,000 years ago. Archaeological excavations at Viking burial sites indicate that the Fjord horse type has been selectively bred for at least 2,000 years.[1][3] The Fjord horse and its ancestors have been used for hundreds of years as farm animals in western Norway. Even as late as World War II, they were useful for work in mountainous terrain. The Fjord horse also has a long recorded history of pure breeding without crossbreeding from other sources.

]]>Today marked my first day off for Easter. As said here, we all have Thursday through Monday off for Easter here in Norway (well, some people work on the Saturday since shops are open only then all these days).

This meal is traditionally served for Christmas in western Norway, but it has slowly become a traditional thing that get served also at Easter. It is called pinnekjøtt, and is salted and cured sheep ribs that we steam and serve with puréed rutabaga, beer and aquavit. It might sound weird, but it is sooooo good!

After eating this heavy meal and drinking quite a bit of alcohol, I still managed to jump on the bike and exercise for an hour, loosing 617 calories - that's called dedication, no?

]]>Awhile ago I bought this huge trout on sale, and today I decided to cook it for dinner. I stuffed it with lemon, butter, rosemary, salt and pepper, wrapped it in foil and put it in the oven. It came out sooooo good! And we have lots of leftovers we can make salmon (trout) patties out of.

]]>The girls and I walked our way to go grocery shopping today, a 5 kilometres walk! Originally it was only I that was going to walk over there, and then the rest of the gang would come after in a car a bit later - I needed to get out moving, since the weather was so nice. Cold, but sunny. But then, both the girls decided they wanted to walk with me! This walk takes us past several places I used to live... one of them being where my husband and I recided the first few years he was living here in Bergen (he is from Iowa, USA). This playground is situated right by where we lived, although it was not there when we lived here. It is a beautiful area down by the harbour in an otherwise very industrial and traffic jammed greater area. We had a few rest stops along the way, and here was the ice cream one, portraied by my oldest daughter! They girls did great and didn't complain once.

]]>Water have always been important to me. I love the sea, the rivers, the waterfalls, and dream of having a small house near by the ocean one day. I love swimming, and learned to do so at a very young age, and loved it when we went hiking in the mountains and I could take a swim in the melted glacier water. Freezing cold, but tit didn't bother me. Still, I will wade or swim in water so cold everyone else shudders just thinking about it. I grew up spending so much time in or near water, and would be lost if I had to go too long without seeing the ocean, a lake or a river.

As a grown up, I've learned to treasure the healing spirit of the water... it cleanses, not only the outside, but within.

We all feel the physical stress of life bearing down on us. I exercise as part of dealing with the stress, but the shower afterward is a huge part in the "detox" as well. We all have so many things on our plates: family, friends, work, social structures which takes a lot of effort, care and attention to keep on track. Spiritually, in our lives we encounter people, concepts and situations that we are forced to deal with in our daily lives that cause us to feel unsettled or challenged.

I stand in the shower a long time to saturate my body with water. Allowing my body to feel relaxed and open from the new energy I am being provided with through this element. The water is cleansing, healing, washing the impurities of the daily chaos away.

]]>My oldest daughters class (5th grade) and the 7th grade performed the Easter musical this year, something that has become a tradition at their school. Normally it is the 6th and 7th grade that have performed it, but apparently the teachers decided since there were so many great actresses and actors in 5th grade this year, they'd take part.

This would be one of the girls in my daughters class as Jesus on the cross.

The songs and their performances of them were really great, so much power and umph!

]]>This is my workplace... being rebuild into a bigger office that will fit two people. Me and the other woman that works in my department will from now on share an office. I am actually looking forward to it, as we already sit and holler across the hallway as it is, and we get along great. Besides, she only works every other week. And the bonus is that we will get all new furnitures, new floor, new interior. It is going to look great in the end!

Currently I sit right across the hall from this building place, and it is loud! Knocing down walls and drilling and sawing makes a lot of noise! Yesterday I went home with a splitting headache due to this. But, I'll live, only a few more days...

]]>The kids stayed with their grandparents from Saturday to mid day Sunday, so we went out to eat with a friend who was also kid free since his kid was at her mom's place for the weekend. Really delicious Indian food at a place I have not tried before, and afterwards we went to a pub for some beer. Good times, good conversations, planning for trips in the summer with our friend and his daughter. Our kids have known each other for close to 8 years, since day care, and we have spent a lot of good time with her father as well. He's been through a rough patch, and is now eager to do all the things and see all the places that was difficult before. Made tentative plans to go to Ireland or Sweden/The Baltics in the early summer with them... We'll see.

]]>On Thursday afternoon Sara had 3 friends from her class over to what they call "friends group". The class has been divided into groups of 4 or 5, and once a month they take turns at getting together the house of one of them, this Thursday being Sara's turn. Her class has grown a lot over the past 2 years; 11 new pupils, mostly immigrants, so it has been an important thing to do to get the new kids acquainted with the "old" ones and vice versa.

They got to us straight from school and needed dinner. We had them make their own individual pizzas - that way they all got to decide what to put on theirs.

]]>Do you ever have one of those days when it is sooo hectic and busy that you just want to... hide from everyone and everything? Monday was like that for me. Since I was absent from the office most of last week due to the Oslo trip, the workload had stacked up mile high. and by the middle of the day I had a little "i just want out of here" moment!

It does not help that my office is the first one in this hallway, so everyone that does not know where they are suppose to go or who they are suppose to see, sops at my door first. Most days I don't mind - I am happy to engage with everyone, but other days... It is a challenge for me most times anyway, to "hide" or blend in... like in larger social gatherings, you know how you don't always want o be noticed? When you just want to be left alone? Problem I have is that it's hard to hide being a six feet blond woman! everyone notice me walking into a room or standing around. And sometimes, I don't want the attention, I want to blend in.

]]>Sunday I went for a looong hike up one of the 7 mountains that surround this city. It was mostly a gorgeous day, but right when I reached the top, i saw this out at sea - a wall of rain! The birds all went crazy, and so did the people; we all ran into the cafeteria that is situated on this mountain top. there, I waited it out, it took only 10 minutes or so, before I hiked back down to the city center to take the bus back home from there.

]]>She signed up for a theater troup last autumn, and today they celebrated themselves and a wonderful season and great performances. They still are doing rounds every Tuesday evening to old peopleæs homes, but the season is about to be wrapped up. Big kick off in august again! It was a greta evening, everyone's family and friends were invited, and we all had to take part in performances and dancing and games and play.

This her before leaving to go the party. She is growing up so fast this girl, and I am so immensely proud of who she is becoming. She is empathetic, loving, happy, sweet, friendly, athletic, spontaneous, courageous in her own ways, smart as a whip... and just a bliss.

]]>It has been a very rainfilled winter/early spring. There has only been a few days with sun the last 3 months or so. And it is starting to wear on me! Especially when coming home from Oslo, where they set heat records this last week, and the sun was shining all days I was there. finding the inspiration to shoot after being on a trip to a different place where you find all sorts of "new!" things that inspire you to shoot is always difficult for me anyway, and the weather is not helping one bit.

Especially since I have several images planned out that requires sun! I've been reading up on photography books (I ordered a bunch awhile ago), and seen images where you use flash combined with natural light (sun) to create images I'd like to give try. But yeah, I need the weather to cooperate! And a few props... I guess I could start there, gather and shop for the props needed for this one image especially.

Day 74/366: Vigeland Sculpture Park after dark

]]>I love this place. Whenever I am in Oslo I try to go there. This time around, I only had time in the evening, which worked great since I got to play with lighting the sculptures with my handheld flash off the camera. It worked best when held up kinda high, almost above the sculptures, which was a challenging task! Trying to shoot at the same time you are trying to reach above the sculpture, not easy! Because these sculptures are huge and massive, some taller than human beings... Good thing I am 6 feet tall myself! Which is also one of the reasons to why I love these sculptures so much I think. Their... solidness and density... I tend to be more attracted to people with a "solid" frame as well - being 6 feet tall, hence not petite, I am attracted to people with a sturdy and solid physical appearance since they make me feel not so massive myself!

I was hoping to get some ace shot of the sculptures back-lit by the sunset, but the sun went down too early, which meant it never really was to be seen much behind the sculptures. I got some shots I will post later, both of the sculptures and the park itself during sunset.

This is one of my all time favorite sculpture in this park. As I once said "What gets me the most about his sculptures is the contrast between their size, the material which is solid rock, and how vulnerable he still managed to portray them."

]]>It was so foggy and gloomy and rainy today! I was in the city for a little bit, to buy my oldest daughter something good for lunch as she was home sick. I had to go to work first, just to gather all the papers and airline info I need for my trip with work to Oslo tomorrow - so looking forward to going! Been awhile since I was there last, in my old job I seemingly went there every other month or so. It is suppose to be really nice, mild and sunny there as well, a big bonus! Can't wait to take some picture in a different city again!

]]>This is an old picture of me and my maternal Grandpa. If he had had been alive, he would have been 108 years old today. The following is something I wrote eons ago about him and the way he influenced the 19 years he was in my life.

Last weekend Husband and I was watching the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, prompted by my parents that wondered if the island the film took place on was a place we would consider going for a vacation. Anyway, the movie was so-so, but it did something to me; it made me think of my maternal Grandpa. He lived through both the first and second world war (the movie is dealing with the latter), both times he worked for the resistance movement - and he played the mandolin.

Sometimes dates fly by and pass without me realizing what the date is. I do know what day of the week it usually is, but sometimes I just don't keep track of the actual date. When I see "November 1st," I can really only think of one thing ... the day my Grandpa died. It's funny because that is the only bad or rather sad memory I really have about my Grandpa. He was the only Grandfather I knew. My Dad's dad died before I was born. I was 19-years old when he passed and to this day I can see his smiling face when I close my eyes and think about him. Though my grandfather’s death was many years ago, I still remember him although my memories of him have started to faint. After breakfast on weekends (my Grandparents lived a 5 minute walk away from us), we would often go to the little park area down by the school and feed the ducks. I would hold my grandpa’s hand and I remember how his hands felt very much like paper, yet very callused from long years of hard work. When it rained out, we would play cards, or he would read to me. Later on, we would watch movies together. Or, the tables turned, and because of his faltering sight, I would read to him. I have about hundred or so books that I inherited from him. He was the biggest source for my love of reading.

My Grandpa was a very calm, quiet and solemn human being. In opposite to my Grandma, who was very bubbly, open, emotional, someone people were drawn to because of her laughter and humour. But people were also drawn to my grandpa, to his intelligence and wisdom. He was the type of person who did not have to yell to make a point; people just stopped and listened. He never needed to discipline because no one was brave enough to disobey him. Out of all the memories I have of him I never remember him being mean. He would spend hours teaching me math, history and physics, helping me with my school work. But more than anything, he thought me about nature and about the moon and stars, the weather. His profession was meteorologist. He could go outside in the evening, look up into the sky and pretty much determine what weather we would get the next day. I still know how to look for some of those weather signs. He thought me about the alignment of the planets and stars, how everything was connected.

He was a whiz when it came to growing, nurturing or planting anything. He loved growing fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers out at the cabin we go almost every weekend all spring, summer and autumn. A place he created back in the late 40’s. The ground was just a big pile of rocks; he dug them all out over many summers, before he finally could build his beloved cabin. He built himself a greenhouse so he could experiment all winter long with his plants. There are many, many pictures of him walking around tending to his land and plants, with me, from the age of 3, in tow a few feet behind. He never got tired of answering my many questions and teaching me about everything we saw. I know how to prune a rose, cut the hedge; get rid of snails, which mushrooms are eatable, how to cover up plants for the winter, the love and admiration for the bats that swirls around the cabin every evening, and so on, because of him. My Grandpa played the mandolin and banjo and would serenade my Grandmother before he married her. I now wish I had picked up the guitar a few years earlier so I could have performed with him. Although, I did accompany him on the piano - I started playing the piano quite young, and my parents could not afford a piano back then, so I used my Grandparents piano to do my lectures on. He loved hearing me play, even when it was way out of tune, and would pick up his mandolin or banjo and play with me. He also painted, oil on canvas – another way he has inspired me. I can thank him for my creativeness more then anyone else.

He was sweet, kind, and loving, but make no mistake, he was the toughest man I have ever known. He worked on a boat that went around the world as a young man. A very though life. His war efforts and the medals and honour letters from the King also remind me of that.

He told me many stories about how it was during the war, how it was trying to survive in an occupied country. There was very little food, so every summer, for 3-4 months, my Aunt and Uncle (my mom was born in 1945) were sent to relatives that had farms outside Bergen, so that they were ensured some proper nutrition. My uncle told me many times how awful the bread he had to eat at home was, made out of scrapings of wood amongst other. I also was told numerous tales of the horror they felt when the sirens went off and they had to flee for life down in the nearest basement.

The worst hit on Bergen actually was not by a bomb, but by an accident. From Wiki: In April 1944, a Dutch boat was on its way from Oslo to Kirkenes when it faced mechanical problems, forcing it to seek repair in Bergen. Due to lack of control, the ship was allowed entrance to Bergen harbor loaded with 124000 kg of explosives, even though the ship did not satisfy security regulations and should not have been allowed into major cities with this cargo. On April 20 at 8:39, the ship exploded at the quay in the center of Bergen. The force of the explosion caused a water column that was hundreds of meters high, spreading heavy debris. Several ships were thrown on land and the Voorbode's anchor was later found on the 417 m high mountain Sandviksfjellet. The air pressure from the explosion and the tsunami that followed flattened whole neighborhoods near the harbor; then fires broke out and further destroyed the wooden houses, leaving 5000 people homeless; 160 people were killed and 5000 wounded, mostly civilians. The Germans initially tried to conceal the extent of the catastrophe, probably because it exposed their failure to maintain security regulations. Because the explosion occurred on Hitler's birthday, there was some suspicion of sabotage, but investigations revealed that the explosion was an accident caused by self-ignition. The help actions after the event were extensive and have been well documented.

My Grandparents house which was situated not far from where we live, quite a bit away from the dock, got all the windows crushed, and my Grandma told me how she was lifted out of bed and flung across the room form the aftershock.

From Wiki again: The resistance movement in Norway during this time did a number of military operations served to subvert the Nazi authorities and contribute to the larger war effort. The Norwegian resistance also smuggled people in and out of Norway during the war, through Sweden or by fishing boats to Shetland (referred to as the "Shetland bus"). A number of saboteurs (most notably Max Manus and Gunnar Sønsteby) destroyed ships andsupplies. Perhaps its most famous achievements were a series of operations to destroy Norsk Hydro's heavy water plant and stockpile of heavy water at Vemork, crippling the German nuclear program. The Germans attempted to stifle Resistance activities and executed several innocent Norwegian men, women and children in retaliation after any Resistance act. Probably the worst act of reprisal was the assault on the fishing village of Telavåg not far from Bergen in the spring of 1942.

Intelligence gathering within occupied Norway was very much needed for the Allied forces, and several organisations were established for this.

The way my Grandpa contributed was through the distribution of illegal Allied news broadcasts. He and some other meteorologist was stationed in a little cabin far up on one of the tallest mountains in Norway, Fanaråken, where the Germans would have no idea to look for them.

Here, they could make sure that news from Norway was brought to the allied forces, and vice versa. Having a radio was forbidden in Norway during the war but people till had them and counted on them to give some information on what was happening with the war. So this resistance was crucial for getting information in and out of the country. The purpose of this was twofold: it counteracted Nazi propaganda, and it maintained nationalistic, anti-German feelings in the population at large.

My grandpa would never take credit for how he affected my life but I’ll always know that he did. He would always make sure to tell me he was proud of me but I don’t think he realized just how much he inspired me to make him proud.

I remember the sinking feeling I got when I heard the words “Parkinsons” and “grandpa” in same sentence. I was twelve years old and I had no idea just how much those words would affect me. I remember seeing his hands trembling, just a tad at first, but eventually so bad that he could not even hold his beloved books to read, even less paint or play his instruments. I remember my grandpa’s brave face through the many treatments and hospital stays due to side effects of the disease, the tears in his eyes when he was finally at bed rest, needing help to change his diapers. It was… extremely humiliating to him, to have to depend on others for such intimate things. I was over at their

Mr C. insisted he wanted his chance at being a working class hero today, and came to work with me. Little did he know how much there would be to get done! He basically got buried in the sheer amount of documents there was to work his way through, and threw the towel in not very long into the work day. ]]>This is my 8 year old, youngest daughter, who has a deep love for anything that has to do with maps, countries, stories of traveling, reading about monuments and famous and less famous places in the world. She can spend hours studying the World Atlas we have. Whenever we go to the library, she comes back with many books about different countries and cultures. She will school me on what she reads, a lot of times she knows lots that I don't about those places. She also has a priority list over places and things she want to go travel to see. Paris, London, Los Angeles, New York and Rio de Janeiro are currently on the top of her list.

One of my new housemates, Stacy, wants to write a story about an astronaut. In his story the astronaut is wearing a suit that keeps him alive by recycling his fluids. In the story the astronaut is working on a space station when an accident takes place, and he is cast into space to orbit the earth, to spend the rest of his life circling the globe. Stacy says this story is how he imagines hell, a place where a person is completely alone, without others and without God.

After Stacy told me about his story, I kept seeing it in my mind. I thought about it before I went to sleep at night. I imagined myself looking out my little bubble helmet at blue earth, reaching toward it, closing it between my puffy white space-suit fingers, wondering if my friends were still there. In my imagination I would call to them, yell for them, but the sound would only come back loud within my helmet. Through the years my hair would grow long in my helmet and gather around my forehead and fall across my eyes. Because of my helmet I would not be able to touch my face with my hands to move my hair out of my eyes, so my view of earth, slowly, over the first two years, would dim to only a thin light through a curtain of thatch and beard. I would lay there in bed thinking about Stacy's story, putting myself out there in the black.

And there came a time, in space, when I could not tell whether I was awake or asleep. All my thoughts mingled together because I had no people to remind me what was real and what was not real. I would punch myself in the side to feel pain, and this way I could be relatively sure I was not dreaming. Within ten years I was beginning to breathe heavy through my hair and my beard as they were pressing tough against my face and had begun to curl into my mouth and up my nose. In space, I forgot that I was human. I did not know whether I was a ghost or an apparition or a demon thing. After I thought about Stacy's story, I lay there in bed and wanted to be touched, wanted to be talked to. I had the terrifying thought that something like that might happen to me. I thought it was just a terrible story, a painful and ugly story. Stacy had delivered as accurate a description of a hell as could be calculated. And what is sad, what is very sad, is that we are proud people, and because we have sensitive egos and so many of us live our lives in front of our televisions, not having to deal with real people who might hurt us or offend us, we float along on our couches like astronauts moving aimlessly through the Milky Way, hardly interacting with other human beings at all.

But sometimes it overwhelms me, and today I have been very tired. ]]>This was shot as I walked through the city on my way to my monthly book circle meetup. This time at my friend Marianne's house in the middle if the center of Bergen. I have known her for... 7 years now, we used to work together at the publishing house. She initiated the book circle back in 2008. There has been people comign and going since then, but we are still a core that has been part of it since the very start. Now we consist of 7 women with quite different backgrounds and careers - there is me, Marianne, who is now a principal for an online school at the publishing house we both worked at (she used to be an editor), a doctor, a documentary filmmaker, an engineer working for Statoil (largest oil company ehre), a psychologist and a teacher.

]]>Today I made what we here call a fastelavensbolle. It is a tradition to bake and serve these at the time of year associated with Lent and especially Shrove Monday or Shrove Tuesday (or the Sunday before here). A lot of European countries share this tradition, albeit the buns are served a bit different from place to place. Here in Norway we make a cardamom-spiced wheat bun which we cut the top off, smother lots of jam and whipped cream on the bottom, then put the top back on which gets dusted with powdered sugar.

We wanted tickets for the show at 1pm, but they were sold out, so we bought tickets for the viewing at 4pm instead- Suddenly we had almost 4 hours to kill in the city - we did well though. Went shopping a bit, ate lunch, went to the pet store to look at all the cuteness. Then finally, movie time ! We saw "Dolphin Time" (www.imdb.com/title/tt1564349/) in 3D, and I forced them to participate for a shot right before the movie started.

They have entertainment, and sell food, things they have made, they have a flea market and a make up station/nail salon... And, they sell lottery tickets that they draw at the end of the evening. Here are to of the girls in Emma's class looking through all the prizes they could possibly win, deciding which they like the best. The head band the one girl is wearing was one of the things Emma's class made to sell, and they sold all out! We were lucky enough to win a set of really nice cutting boards and knives. i really enjoy these kinds of evenings at the school, whether it is a charity event like this one or an end of the school year party or whatnot. It is nice touching base with other parents and the teachers in a more informal setting.

]]>These are two photos of mine from wayyyyy back that are blown to poster size and framed. They were shot on Crete (a Greek island) in 2008, only a month into me being the owner of my very first Dslr camera - the Nikon D40. I was pretty clueless as to the technical side of using a dslr camera at that time (still feel I am at times!), but I guess I sort of have always had a natural talent when it comes to seeing what would make an interesting subject to shoot.

These images are going to be used to decorate one of the many hallways of offices at work. somehow someone got notice that I take a lot of photos, and when she was looking for some more to fit in with a theme of this one hallway which is buildings/windows/doors from Greece, she asked me if i had any from there. And I did! These were shot the last time we went there, and it has been way too many years. We used to travel there a lot, but the monetary situation over the last few years have been strained, and we have been traveling other places as well... but this autumn, we are going to Tolo (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolo,_Greece), by invitation from my parents. This is a tiny fishing village on the peninsula pf Peloponnese on the mainland of Greece.I have been there a few times before and I love that place, for itself, but also the fact that it is close to so many of the great sites of Greece... Olympia, Acropolis, Mycenae etc. I am excited to go to Greece again with a better camera and better skills to use it!

The project of decorating the walls at work is suppose to be interchangeable, where we can switch out pictures and artwork from time to time, so maybe some of my other pictures will also end up on the walls there, when there are new and different themes. they print them in-house as we have a full printing department that makes leaflets and brochures and books and posters etc used to inform both us that works there as well as the public about different things. Anyway, it feels good to be recognized of sorts.

I used the following recipe, but added the pepper for some color and texture, and had the shrimp lay in a marinade of olive oil, lemon pepper, lemon juice, garlic and a little bit of chili for awhile before cooking. I also let the butter and garlic simmer for a bit with the white wine to reduce it, before throwing the scampi in.

]]>Guess many of you probably don't know that mother's day is celebrated on different days around the globe, huh? Since this is a "made up day" it was the retailers here that decided February would be a good month, since we don't celebrate Valentine's day here and it was a low income month for them. Things change, and there are a bit of an upcoming thing to now celebrate also Valentine's day, so the businesses are happy about that! not many get in trouble for forgetting it, though, since it is not... expected yet to be showered with chocolate, flowers and gifts. so far, I think for most people it would be a pleasant surprise if someone DID remember or took notice.

My gang made me these yummy muffins, and I was also able to get some hours just to myself i the middle of the day as my oldest daughter was doing her last theater performance and my husband took my youngest daughter with him to watch it. Together with being able to enjoy the girls company before and after. as you should on Mother's day I guess, it was a nice day. But, the hours to just be, and get time in for exercising in peace and quiet, was heavenly I must admit. :)

Pamela Ribon (Why Girls Are Weird)

Today I met up with some of the people from Bergen flickr group at Bergen kaffebrenneri, a place where they roast and make their own special blends of coffee. I got to taste lots of different coffees, and they were all very tasty! Unfortunately I didn't bring any cash (they didn't accept cards) so I could not buy some coffee to take home. Next time though. Also, I had to leave before all the flickr people arrived, since Sara was with me and I had promised her a trip to the library, and we had to get there before closing time!

I loved the ambiance and rough style of the place, and will definitely come back. This coffee shop they run as a "side business" to the coffee making (they sell their coffee to different shops) is open one Saturday every month, so the timing is not always easy as the weekends can be pretty packed with the girls handball matches and theater shows and birthday parties and dinners at friends and what not. But, I will definitely go there again when time permits. More shots here.

Day 41/366: War And Peace

]]>I spend 2X40 minutes on a bus every day, going to and from work. And, I get outrageously easily car sick (which I had to try and explain to the quite aggravated and semi violent drug addict that wanted my seat the other day, since he was on a seat that faced backwards. I just couldn't, since I also get so car sick, and he laid into me and tugged at me, calling me this and the other bad word, before his friend finally pulled him away!) so I can't read, or play word games on my phone, or look anywhere else then out the window. Which means a lot of dead time!

The other day I got an email about a new app for phones, called Ordflyt (Fleeting of words), where you can download thousands of books to your phone. The promoted it by giving a certain time of free trial, and I went and downloaded the book we are currently reading at the book circle I am part of, "War And Peace" by Tolstoy. So, now I am immersed in stories of grandeur society in Pre-reform Russia, depicting the French invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, with intrigues and gossips and power struggles among the counts and countesses - much like a soap opera, its like Dynasty of the 1800 hundreds!

I enjoy it, and it is nice to read the classics in between, because so much of today's cultural expressions are influenced by them. We have decided the books for the next months as well, and I am especially looking forward to the book "New Finnish Grammar" by Diego Marani www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/may/26/finnish-grammar-dieg...

The stack of papers I am laying on top of is about 2 weeks worth of work for me. Every document I get in I have to log, assign a case worker to, scan, file etc. It means every document has to be read thoroughly to understand what it is about so that I can assign the right person to deal with it. It is not always easy, we get the weirdest cases. Like, the other day when I got a letter where someone wanted to apply for having a first right to drive his ambulating butcher truck on to the ferries in our county in an emergency situation where ha had been called out to kill an animal that suffered. And wouldn't you believe it. there are rules and regulations and a certain archive key even for this!

It is interesting so far, maybe a lot to do with it still being new to me. A major part of the cases I deal with has to do with driving licenses, renewals, applications about being able to drive with this or that disability, disease or medication, applications to switch a foreign driving license with a Norwegian one etc. But, I also get an insight in all the plans for new roads, new tunnels, new bridges, new shops even, since they also have to apply for making changes to the roads and parking where they want to start up business. The aim is to serve the people in the communities the best we can, and that in itself feels rewarding.

]]>It was a typical Bergen winter day today... well, except from the winter we've had the last 2 years, where it has been really cold and with snow on the ground for weeks and months. This winter we've hardly seen the snow, and when it has been here, it disappears quickly - much more to the norm. This is what met me when walking to the busstop today to go to work - a big mushy, sloppy mess that made my feet soaking wet instantly, and all the traffic a mess. I was 20 minutes late for work after sitting in lines of vehicles, and after the bus crawled down the steep, windy road from the hillside it passes over to get to where I work. It was slipping and sliding back and forth in between, but thankfully the bus driver managed to keep us on the road. It was blistering outside today, snow blowing sideways, so I spent the whole day inside, for the most part curled up on the couch in the company of my youngest daughter, playing games with her on the computer in between bouts of folding laundry. And the fire was going the whole day to keep the place warm.

]]>This is my oldest daughter Emma as one of the mice in the theater production of Bads (Bergen Amateur dramatic society) "Cinderella". The play had it's premier today, and it went very well! As it says on Wikipedia;

Emma ended up having one of the biggest parts in many ways, since the mice were on stage almost all through the 2 hour play. I am very proud of her and her performance!

One of the benefits at my new place of work is that they support physical activity, either by sponsoring you with about 500 US dollars per year that could go towards a gym membership for instance, or you can choose to take one hour every week off during work hours to go exercise. I have chosen the last option, since the hectic family life that has to be followed up after work don't give much room for going to the gym. i have my stationary bike and dumbbells at home that works for me since I can do it when there sis free moment. I have yet to pick that habit back up after Christmas, with the new job starting and the traveling to Leikanger for job training, but I will. For now, I have taken on trying to get out for a walk one hour every week.

Today is the first day of snow in forever here, and it was so gorgeous. I have discovered that right next to where I work is one of the largest wood trails here in Bergen! Called Canada forest, supposedly named so due to the large and tall pine trees that reminded a Boy Scout troop leader who's troop used these trails a lot back in the early 1900's of the woods he had seen in Canada once.

Reading up on the area, it is also commonly used by paintball clubs in Bergen! I didn't get too far today, given I had not planned this very well when leaving this morning, and had the total wrong clothes and boots on for a longer trail in ankle deep snow. Had I thought it through, i should have brought my cross country skis! I'm thinking this will be a wonderful place to hike once a week, especially come summer and spring. I could include my lunch into the time, and eat lunch up by the water for instance. I'm thrilled about this opportunity, as I crave spending time in nature on a regular basis for my spirit and mental health, and getting time to do so after work is not always easy! It is going to be a nice weekly retreat me thinks, with lots of photo opportunities!

]]>This might seem like darkness to most of you, but to me this photo represents light! The mornings here are starting to get lighter, and compared to the beginning of this year, or for that matters, December of last year, there is such a difference. This is shot right as I got off the bus this morning, next to where I work, at 7:51 am, and I see how the sky has a blue hue that pierce through the darkness and how it is not pitch black anymore at this time of day.

This is what made me smile this morning. :)

My hands are creative in many ways, not only with photography. They can knit, do embroidery, draw, paint, bake, make food... and play piano, amongst other. As I promised myself when Emma got her new piano for her Birthday last October, I am still trying to do some exercises and play some every week. It is a lot of fun, and it brings back so many memories. I started playing when I was Emma's age,and the first few years we didn't have a piano at home, so I had to rehearse at my Grandpa and Grandma. They lived a 5 minutes walk away, and I was there after school more or less every day until my parents got home from work, so it was easy enough. The only thing was that their piano was really old, and missed a few keys and required someone to come and tune it quite often! It was a really nice old Steinweg, though, with candle light holders and all. I miss that piano and wished someone had taken care of it when they died... not sure what happened to it.

When I play, it reminds me of my Grandpa in particular, because he played the banjo, and before he got too sick (he had Parkinson and his hand started shaking so much he could not play the last few years), he would accompany me a lot.

I miss him.
